News: New Slingo chat feature & the Slingo Daily Challenge gets an upgrade!

SlingoLogo

Slingo has had a rank system for some time now, and they’re really trying to draw more attention to it. One thing that they recently did is add rankings to chat!

ranksinchat It’s in the upper left corner, in the red box.

Now you can see what everyone else’s rank is, which I think is kinda fun. ^_^ And it really makes me want to increase my rank! Right now there isn’t any bonus for achieving any specific rank, but yeah, I dig bragging rights.

Not sure how to increase your rank? Check the rank breakdown for full details, but basically you earn points for making friends, playing games, and entering tournaments. In other words, you increase your rank by being active and getting involved with the community. Not a bad thing!

The Slingo Daily Challenge recently got another powerup, which means I need to go update the guide again. *Facepalm*

The new powerup lets you get extra spins, so you can go beyond the normal 20!! Woot!

Also, they added a leaderboard to show you how you compare with your friends for that day’s challenge.

slingodailychallengeupdate 11th place? Pfft.

I like it, but I kinda miss having the option to chat with other people who are playing. Slingo Daily Challenge has never had that option, but I still would like it.

And that’s the latest and greatest from Slingo! They’re getting pretty active on their blog, so be sure to check it now and then to catch any news that I may have missed.

What do you think of ranks being included in chat now? Do you like the leaderboard in the Slingo Daily Challenge?

Slingo Daily Challenge: P-p-p-p-power!

Slingo Daily Challenge is a new game at Slingo. It’s a really neat expansion on the classic Slingo game! (Read the guide on Slingo Classic to learn about the coins, Jokers, Cherub, and Devil.)

This is a solo game so you’re not trying to beat anyone else. You have 5 minutes to take your spins and match the numbers! I really love that I don’t have to wait for everyone else to finish each turn. *^_^*

And if you couldn’t guess by the name, each day you’ll get a new challenge score to beat. (Thus the “Daily Challenge” part.) Beat it and you’ll earn 150,000 Slingo coins! If you can’t beat it you’ll get 10,000 coins and a chance to try again.

But what really makes this a fabulous game is the addition of powerups!

slingoboard
Oooooh! Fun!!

Powerups are a common feature in their downloadable games, but this is the first time they’ve been included on a browser-played Slingo game. I like it. ^_^

Each day you get between one and nine powerups. (So far I’ve only seen between 2-6, but I don’t play every single day.) Currently there are ten different powerups and an 11th will be released later this month.

So right now there are a total of 3,628,800 powerup combinations. It would take you 103,680 years to play a different one each day!

In other words, you’re not likely to get bored with this one. ^_^

I have no idea how many total powerups they plan on releasing, but here’s what’s out so far. (The Instant Slingos powerup is new TODAY!)

freespins
bounceslingos
devilprotection
extrajokers
extrasuperjokers
instantslingos
multipliers
platcoin
powershot
nudge
slingovision

Most of these are pretty self explanatory, but here’s more info on a few of the trickier ones.

Bounce Slingos

As you know, normally Slingos can only be made when you cover five in a row, column, or diagonal. Getting the Bounce Slingos powerup adds two new patterns to the board!

The first one is very simple.

singlebounceslingop1 It’s smiling at me!

That’s a Slingo! That shape activates four new Slingos on the board. You can also look at it this way, if it helps.

bouncepattern1 Um.. Thanks?

For some reason I have a harder time remembering the second pattern, but it works like this:

sinblebounceslingo Check!

It may look simple, but this this pattern adds sixteen Slingos to the board! If you drew them all out it’d look something like this.

bouncepattern2b o_O Well, that’s… colorful.

If you’re not into planning your Slingos out, just place your Jokers wherever you want and don’t worry about it. ^_^

Devil Protection

This is one of my favorite powerups, mainly because I HATE that darn Devil. >_< But there’s another great reason to have the Cherub save your behind. Sometimes zie’ll double your score!

doubledscoreWoohooo!!

Whenever you look at the daily scores and wonder how in the heck people got that high, this is the answer. The Cherub saved their behind multiple times, and generously doubled their score in the process!

Keep in mind that Devil Protection doesn’t mean that you’ll get your score doubled every time a Cherub saves you. But it does mean that you won’t lose any points at all to that darn Devil!

Power Shot

This one is awesome. ^_^ When the icon pops up, you can match any number in the column above it. But when you click the number you’re really getting five spots at once! It looks like this:

powershotpattern Nice!

Very handy!

Slingo Vision

This is another of my faves too. (Is there a powerup I dislike? Probably not.)

Slingo Vision automatically highlights available moves, which makes the games SUPER fast. ^_^ I love it.

sligovisionactivated Slingo Vision, activate!

Tips & Tricks

The value of Slingos increases when you have them in succession.

  • 1st Slingo = 1000 points
  • 2nd Slingo = 1500 points
  • 3rd Slingo = 2000 points
  • 4th Slingo = 2500 points
  • 5th Slingo = 3000 points
  • 6th Slingo = I hope you get the idea by now.

When you click SPIN it starts over, so try to plan your Slingos out and get as many as you can in one turn!

Since the game changes every day, that’s really the only tip I’ve figured out so far! *^_^*

Final Rating

I really enjoy the variety in the Slingo Daily Challenge, and I look forward to seeing future powerups! The challenge score is also pretty neat, but it’s frustrating when the only way you can get it is to have the Cherub save your behind AND double your score. I’m not usually that lucky. :(

Other than that little bit, it’s a fantastic game! ^_^ I rate it 4.5 stars out of 5. What would you rate it? Do you have a favorite powerup? Least favorite?

If you like Slingo Daily Challenge, well, you should probably hang around Slingo and play some more of their games! XD But if you want to branch out, try some of these!

New Slingo Game!

Today marks the launch of a new game at Slingo: The Slingo Daily Challenge!

Slingo Daily Challenge Oooooooooh! Fancy!

Each day you get new power-ups and a new challenge score to beat. You’ll get 10,000 Slingos each time you play, and 150,000 Slingos for the first time you beat that day’s challenge!

Since it’s only been out one day, I haven’t had a chance to experience different challenges. But so far it’s pretty fun. ^_^ I really like that you have 5 minutes to play, so you can spin as fast as you want. No need to wait for the rest of the room to finish, and no more frustrated searching for a last number before the time run out!

I’m interested to see the different power-ups! And I’m really curious whether we all have the same challenge/power-ups each day, or if it’s unique to each person.

Go play and tell me what you get! ^_^

5 Card Slingo - INSEFTG

If you’ve never played poker before, well, don’t start with 5 Card Slingo. *^_^* I’m serious! Go with Quick-Draw Poker, since that’s nearly impossible to mess up.

On the other hand, if “regular” poker is too boring for you, then you’ll LOVE 5 Card Slingo! It’s a fast-paced cross between poker and slots.

You start with a very green 5x5 board. This is where you’ll place your cards.

5cardslingoboard It ain’t easy being green.

On each deal you’ll get five cards. Now the tricky part is that each card can only be placed in the column directly above it. Also, once the cards are placed, you can’t remove them. Until the round is over you can move cards around in their own columns, but you can’t put another card on top or anything sneaky like that. ^_^

5cardmidplayWell…. crap.

Each row, column, and diagonal line counts as a separate hand and is scored individually. It can get a little confusing, but at least you don’t need to have a full hand (5 cards) before it’s scored!

Every game consists of five deals plus a sixth bonus deal. (The bonus deal costs 500 points.) The deals are timed, and you have a maximum of 30 seconds to decide what to do!

Those of you who are math savvy may have noticed a slight discrepancy. With six deals of five cards each, you’ll have a total of 30 cards to work with. But there are only 25 spots on the board. How can that work?

Easy. ^_^ You don’t have to place every card that you get! If you have something awesome going on and the wrong card pops up, just don’t use it.

IMPORTANT: The cards are taken from a virtual 52 card deck. (That’s a normal deck.) If you pass up a card it won’t turn up again!

Scoring

As previously mentioned, each row, column, and diagonal line counts as a hand.

5cardflushA flush! Woohoo!!!

The entire board is scored after each deal, and you’ll get points for any new combinations. In other words, if you score a pair after the first deal, you won’t get points for that same pair again.

However, if you add to it by making it 3 of a kind or better, then you’ll get additional points for whatever you scored.

Here’s what everything is worth!

Hand What It Is Value
1 pair Two cards with the same number or letter. 50 points
2 pairs Four cards in sets of two. 100 points
3 of a kind Three cards with the same number or letter. 500 points
Straight Five cards in sequential order. Ex: 2,3,4,5,6 1,000 points
Flush Five cards of the same suit. (Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, or Clubs.) 2,500 points
Full House A pair + 3 of a kind 3,500 points
4 of a kind Four cards with the same number or letter. 20,000 points
Straight Flush Five cards in the same suit AND in sequential order. 36,000 points
Royal Flush 10, J, Q, K, and Ace of the same suit. 50,000 points

Tips & Tricks

1. If you’re dealt a straight in the first deal or two, lay it out diagonally. Typically it’s pretty hard to score anything on the diagonal, and this will leave your columns and rows open for pairs, flushes, or whatever else you want. ^_^

2. The easiest way to score well 9 out of 10 games is to build for flushes. Put one suit on each row, and use the 5th row to create pairs in the columns.

If you start out with a pair, split it on the diagonal. Like this!

workforflush How come?

You’ll get credit for the pair and you’re all set to build flushes. If you’re lucky you might get a 3rd seven to turn it into 3 of a kind. However! If you already have a 4 card flush, don’t wreck it! The 3 of a kind is worth 500 points and the flush is 2,500. Not worth it!

Here’s another hand built for flushes.

4layerflush My that’s… colorful. ^_^

You can see that the bottom four rows are divided by suit, and the very top row made a pair of 5’s and Jacks.

This doesn’t work perfectly for every single game, but most of the time I’ll score at least one flush. Often more!

Admittedly, I’m not an expert at 5 Card Slingo. If you have tips, PLEASE share! (Remember, the best tip of the week gets 100 P4P points!)

Final Rating

I enjoy poker and slots, but 5 Card Slingo is too complicated for my taste. Whenever I play I can’t help but think, “I’m not smart enough for this game.” *^_^*

Once I figured out the flush trick I started earning more tokens and having more fun, but my strategy is limited. Also, on more than one occasion I had a perfect Royal Flush set up, and actually got the 5th card! Unfortunately the final card was in the wrong column, so I couldn’t use it. Booooo! :(

I think I would enjoy 5 Card Slingo more if it was a single player, untimed game. I like having time to think!

Final verdict is… *drumroll*  3.5 stars out of 5.

How about you? What would you rate it? Do you think it’s a simple game or does it make your head hurt too? ^_^

Newsy Newsness!

Hi! Have you missed me? I’ve certainly missed you! *Hugs* ^_^ The Winster project is 60% complete! I’d hoped to have time to post at least one guide a week for you guys, but I’ve had very little free time lately. The next two weeks should finish up the Winster project and then I can come back to you, my lovelies!

There’s a lot going on this week and I just HAVE to tell you about it! First off, Free2WinGames.com got to interview the Product Manager of Gamesville, Chris Cummings! Look for that to be posted around Wednesday.

Poke the penguin playing slots Woohooo!!

Gamesville has been mad busy with creative projects of their own! They’ve started a podcast contest called WinSight. It’s free to enter and they have cash prizes of up to $250! They’ve also added GVTV, which lets you watch free shows on the site! I don’t have speakers so I haven’t tried it, but it’s getting rave reviews on the Gamesville Facebook page!

And if all of that wasn’t enough, it’s also Cashtober at Gamesville! The daily $25 sweeps are now $100, the weekly sweeps $100 is now $500, and the monthly sweeps is $1000!! Be sure you enter!!

In other news, Slingo has cleaned up their homepage even more! I really love the crisp look!

slingolayout3

Also, one of Free2WinGames.com’s readers, Emilyne, won $1000 in Slingo’s monthly sweeps!! Major congrats!!!

Rumor on the street is that Spigo is releasing a new game this week. I don’t know what it is, but it’s coming out tomorrow!! Woot!

And I just had to add “Woot” to my spell check dictionary. I’m surprised I didn’t add that years ago. *^_^*

Anywho! Winster has gone from a sleeping giant on Facebook to an active participant with a quickly growing following! They’re almost at 4,500 followers on the Winnie Winster FB page! Nice job!

Keep an eye on their Facebook page tomorrow (Monday) because they’re going to start a contest for one of their new merchandise items! They created a shop at Zazzle.com with some interesting merch.

I’m really excited because it gives me more prizes to offer for the Free2WinGames prize program! I haven’t forgotten about it and I’m still working out the kinks. It will most likely be called Points4Prizes but I’m open to suggestions. ^_^ Hopefully it will be ready for full release by November. Stay tuned for more details!

New layout for Slingo!

I might be the only person excited about this, but I don’t care. ^_^ If you recall, in the Slingo site review I confessed that the layout was just far too busy.

Don’t feel like looking at the link? Fine fine. Here’s what it used to look like.

previous Slingo layout Wow…

That actually isn’t the whole page. There was also a banner on top, and I had to scroll down to get the bottom part in.

Well look who’s nice and shiny now!

slingorevamp Ooooh!!

Can’t see the difference? Allow me to point everything out. ^_^

  • The categories on the left went from 32 to 19. That’s a 40% cut in the number of links!
  • The middle section is drastically cleaned up. I can clearly see several featured games in one glance, and… well… It doesn’t look like a newspaper anymore. *^_^*
  • On the far right the Members’ highlight and text blurb about Slingo is gone.

Best of all, I can see everything clearly without needing to scroll down! Heck, even after I included the banner AND corporate info, I still have about 2 inches on my screen!

I’m so excited for them! The new layout looks sharp! *Boogies*

What do you think of all this? Did you even care about the last layout? ^_^

Edit: I have since learned that they’re trying out several layouts. If you want to share your feedback please post in the Slingo forums!

Mixed Matrix Slingo – There is no spoon.

If you’ve played Slingo Classic and thought it was too easy, well I have a game for you! Mixed Matrix Slingo takes the board and shuffles everything up. When you spin for numbers it can be anywhere on the board!

Both games are available (of course) at Slingo! But if you haven’t played either game, well let’s start at the beginning. ^_^

Mixed Matrix Slingo is a cross between Bingo and slots. In each game you get a board with 25 numbers on it, and you have 20 spins to match all of the numbers on your board.

Mixed Matrix Slingo board  Purple!

On each spin you’ll get a total of five numbers and/or special pieces. (I’ll get to the special pieces in a moment.) And if you didn’t catch what I said earlier, the numbers can be anywhere on the board. You have a few seconds to find them, so you’d better be quick!

The first 16 spins are free, but the last four cost points.

  • Spin 17 – 500 points
  • Spin 18 – 1000 points
  • Spin 19 – 1500 points
  • Spin 20 – 2000 points

You can see why it’s best to finish your card as soon as possible. ^_^

For each number you match you’ll earn 400 points. Whenever you cover five numbers in a row, column, or diagonally, that’s a Slingo and it’s worth 2000 points!

Little bit of math here. ^_^ Covering every number on your card is worth a total of 34,000 points! (10,000 points for the numbers and 24,000 points for all of the Slingos.)

When you fill your card you get a Full Card [FC] bonus.

Full Card bonus

Full card! Woohoo!

The earlier you fill your card, the bigger the bonus! You won’t fill your card every hand, so enjoy whatever bonus you pick up. ^_^

When the game is over your score converts into Slingos. In the above picture I gained 48,000 Slingos. Sweet!

HOWEVER! To play Mixed Matrix Slingo you must pony up at least 10,000 Slingo coins at the start of each game. This goes into a group pool and the number one player gets all of it!

Earning back 10,000 coins isn’t a problem with this game. If you want to really gamble, check out the 25k, 50k, or 100k rooms!

Special Pieces

Sometimes you’ll get more than just numbers on a spin. If you’re lucky you might get a gold coin or two. ^_^

GOLD!! Shiny!

These beauties are worth 2,000 points each! Woohoo!! They’re a wonderful boost to your score, and it’s always great to start a game with three gold coins. ^_^ But when I’m near the end and need just 2-3 numbers to fill my card, well.. then I’m not quite as happy to see coins.

Another great item (and it’s always great) is the free spin!

Free Spin token Weeee!!!

Free spin tokens appear at random and they’re “saved” for the later rounds. You can have up to four, and they’re listed under the spin number. In the picture below I was on spin 16 out of 20 and had 2 free spins!

Free Spin counter Two more, please!

As soon as you get to round 17 you’ll have an option to pay or use your free spin. ALWAYS pay before you use free spins!

If I have two free spins I’ll most likely need to pay for two spins, unless I get a full card. Now follow my math here. ^_^ If I use my free spins on 17-18, then I’ll have to pay 3,500 points for spins 19-20. On the other hand, if I pay for spins 17-18, then it’s only 1,500 points. It might not seem like a big deal, but remember, you’re competing against other players. 2,000 points can make a huge difference!

The next special piece is the Joker. Whenever it appears you can mark any number in the column above it! If you get three or more Jokers, you get an extra bonus!

3 Joker BonusHi, guys!

Jokers are awesome. ^_^

  • 3 Jokers = 1,000 point bonus
  • 4 Jokers = 2,500 point bonus
  • 5 Jokers = 10,000 point bonus!

Getting five Jokers is extremely rare! If you’re lucky enough to get it, CELEBRATE! ^_^ Send me a message and I’ll celebrate with ya!

In addition to the regular Jokers, every now and then the rare green Super Joker appears.

Super Joker Hey! Where’s my pot of gold?

The Super Joker can be placed anywhere on the board! He’s flexible!

IMPORTANT: Look before you place the Super Joker! See how the numbers beside him are grayed out? That’s because you have to place the Super Joker first. If you aren’t careful you’ll mark a number that you would have gotten anyway. (Ex: Marking an 18 when you already spun an 18.) It’s a waste of the Super Joker and it’s REALLY frustrating. ~_~

Moving on!

So far these are all good things, but the devil is in the details.

Darn Devil! Or in the reels.

That was a terrible segue, but I couldn’t resist. ^_^

Every now and then the Darn Devil will appear with a burst of flames on the reels. He’s truly, truly evil, and takes half of your points. (Bribes and begging don’t work. He’ll still take your points.)

He might show up at the beginning of a game, when you barely have anything to lose. He might show up at the end and shove you from first place into last. (It happens!) You might not see him for many games, or you might see him several times in one game. He’s random, and it sucks when he strikes. Sometimes people in chat will say “DD” which means they got hit. An appropriate response is, “ss” which means, “So sorry!” Or if you don’t care, don’t say anything. ^_^

Luckily, we have one defender against the Darn Devil: the Cherub.

Cherub YAY!!! *Boogies*

If fate smiles upon you, the Cherub will swoop down, fan away the flames of Hades, and you’ll get to keep your points. ^_^ He seems to rescue me about 25% of the time. I guess he’s stuck in traffic for the other 75%.

In chat someone might say “csmb” which means “Cherub saved my behind.” You could say “grats” or “wtg” or glare jealously at your screen. (I pick the latter.)

Handy Things

Player rankings change after every spin. To see how you compare to others, hit the “Scores” tab at the top. Instant list of current rankings!

Scores tab Hmmm.. Did you wait until you were #1 to get this pic?

And yes, I did wait for a game where I was #1. ^_^

You may notice the “News” tab right next to the “Scores.” Whenever anyone gets 4 Jokers, 5 Jokers, or gets a Full Card [FC], it’s posted in the news.

news tab I’m sensing a pattern here.

Oh shush. *^_^*

Tips & Tricks

1. Each spin you have only a few seconds to see if you have any matches. I usually start clicking while my eyes search the grid. There’s no penalty for misclicks!

When you move your cursor over the squares they’ll either light up or stay white.

cropped board I like fireflies!

If the squares light up that means you have at least one match on the board! It might not be the square your cursor is on, so keep searching!

2. Place the Jokers FIRST. It’s very common for the Joker to be the only match you can make, and you’ll waste a lot of time searching for the numbers on the other reels.

3. Know your blind spots! For some reason my eyes skim right over the numbers directly above the reels. Whenever I can’t find a match (but I know it’s there) I make sure to check the bottom line.

Final Rating

I like Mixed Matrix Slingo, but I kinda like Slingo Classic more. The extra challenge just makes my head hurt. *Sheepish grin*

Mixed Matrix Slingo is still a great game, it just doesn’t rock my world. 4 out of 5 stars.

What would you rate it? Do you have any tips to share?

Para-Dice - One game. 3 ways to play!

Para-Dice is a single-player Slingo game. It's basically Yahtzee with a different name. ^_^ I wasn't sure I'd like it, but it turned out to be a lot of fun!

The Basics

Each game has 13 rounds. You have 5 dice and you get 3 rolls each round to create the best hand possible. "Keep" a die by clicking and dragging it to the side.

Points are pretty simple. There are thirteen categories and you mark one each round. The top half only scores the dice for that category. For example, if you ended up with a one and 4 sixes, marking the ones row would earn 1 point. On the other hand, if you marked the sixes row you'd earn 24 points!

If you get 63+ points from the top section alone then you'll pick up 35 bonus points!

The bottom section is a little more complicated.
  • 3 of a Kind = Requires at least three identical dice. The face value of those dice plus the remaining two dice is your score. Aim for 3 fives or 3 sixes.
  • 4 of a Kind = Requires at least four identical dice. The face value of those dice plus the remaining die is your score. Aim for 4 fives or 4 sixes.
  • Full House = 25 points. You need three of a kind AND a pair of dice.
  • Small Run = 30 points. Must have at least 4 dice in sequential order. Such as 1, 2, 3, 4.
  • Large Run = 40 points. Must have all 5 dice in sequential order. Such as 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
  • All Five = All 5 dice are the same number. This is always 50 points, no matter what numbers are on the dice.
  • Chance = Face value of all dice.
If this is too confusing, here's a cheat sheet.

Okay, that's pretty handy. Thanks! ^_^

IMPORTANT: If you mark a category but don't meet the requirements, you'll score 0 points. You can't undo misclicks, so be careful!

Triple The Fun

Para-Dice has a few unique features. First off, you can play 1-4 columns at a time. The benefit of playing multiple columns is that the games last a lot longer, so you'll get fewer commercials.

Next, there are three different ways to play.

Ooooh!!

In normal play you pick which category you want to score in each round.

Since you have more control over your score, you should see the highest numbers in normal mode.

Nice!

Each point is worth 100 Slingo coins. ^_^

The next option is playing Top to Bottom. This means that you start at the top category and work your way down. Since you can't pick the best category to fit what you rolled, expect to score a lot of goose eggs.

Ouch.

On the upside, you'll earn more Slingo coins for your trouble!

Yay!!

Each point in top to bottom mode is worth 250 Slingo coins!

Lastly, you can play left to right. This just what it sounds like. ^_^ You play columns from left to right!

Once again, since you can't pick the best category for your rolls, expect to see a LOT of zeros.

That's not very good.

In my opinion, playing left to right is just as difficult as playing from top to bottom. (And gets kinda boring.) But for some reason each point is only worth 150 Slingo coins. Go figure.

Tips & Tricks

1. If you're using "normal" play, keep an eye out for any roll with at least 2 sixes or 2 fives. Try to build them into 3 or 4 of a kind to maximize your points.

2. Another tip for "normal" play is to try and spread out your scores in the top half. Remember, whenever you score 63 in the top section, you earn another 35 points! Create a "waste" column for your low scores.

3. Runs are tricky, but they're AWESOME for points! Look for starter sets like "234" or "345." Since those numbers are in the middle you have a good chance at turning them into at least a small run.

4. Maximize the Chance category. On the first roll keep all of the sixes and fives. On the 2nd roll keep the sixes, fives, and fours. Anything lower than that has a 50% chance to come out as a higher number on the final roll.

5. Rolling a Full House is tricky when you're playing top to bottom or left to right. You need a LOT of luck if you don't start out with at least one pair. But if you do end up pairless, roll everything again. Don't keep any of the dice. Odds are high that you'll get a pair on the 2nd roll. But if you keep a random die, you might not turn it into a pair.

Final Rating

The first time I played Para-Dice, I opted for "normal play" and I got pretty bored. Next I played "left to right," and that was definitely more interesting. But again, I got bored. (4 columns was too much for me.) Then I played "top to bottom," and man.. that was a hoot! I got a lot of laughs from trying to get the categories in the bottom half. ^_^

At the end, I must admit that I had a lot of fun with Para-Dice. I'm glad that I tried all three methods to see which one I liked best. Give it a shot!

4 out of 5 stars.
